The Harbour City Bears are going back to the theatre!
Join us at Qtopia as we've booked out the whole theatre for an exclusive bears' performance of Beautiful Thing.
It’s 1997- Ste, Leah and Jaime are fighting school, the world, each other and their parents, but none of them really know how to ask for the help they need. Until one night when something finally changes, something beautiful grows and blooms in the harsh grey soil of the South London council estates.
Beautiful Thing is a love story about resilience, community, queerness and how choosing to love and love freely, can be the most important part.
Beautiful Thing by Johnathan Harvey was written in 1997, yet it is as powerful today as when it was first performed. It is a coming-of-age story, tracking Ste and Jaime's love as they grow into themselves, and their queerness and begin to find courage in each other. Set in a council estate, the play shines a light on the struggles of working-class Britain. It emphasises the joy of finding community and choosing your family - even if that family is your weird neighbour who's obsessed with Mama Cass. Even when the odds are stacked against them, Ste, Jaime, Sandra, and Leah face the world with grit, kindness and steely humour.

Come along to play Nintendo Switch on the big screen, or settle down with some mates and a board game or two- we've got a wide selection, and you're more than welcome to bring your own.
Our dungeonmaster Richard often runs a beginners' Dungeons & Dragons campaign, so if you're new to D&D, come along and we'll teach you how to play.
The pool tables at the Townie are also open for use, so if you're a learner or a shark, you can have a friendly game with your beary mates!
Best of all, the day leads straight into our Sunday Social, so hang around afterwards to socialise with the bears!
The days are free for you to relax and explore the local area.
Thursday night we've got a BBQ and camp movie night, with BBQ dinner supplied, and a camp movie classic, follow by drinks and chats around the fire.
Friday night make your own dinner in the shared kitchen or BBQ, or head into town to one of the local pubs. After dinner, we will have bear beats for us to enjoy, as well as other night activities that our previous attendees know and love- there's a dance area, a play area, and bears ready to go!
Saturday night, after dinner, relax with a drink around the campfire, play some games, do some stargazing, or find out exactly what it is that bears do in the woods at night.
You can camp anywhere on the site, as near or far from other campers as you want. There's lots of areas available to camp, including some that are only accessible with a 4WD or by bushwalking.
Around the camp kitchen are plenty of spaces, but there are also some sloped areas, so if you want to be super close to the action, make sure you are ok camping on a slope. The campgrounds further afield have excellent flat areas, and lots of privacy and quiet.
The camp kitchen & meeting house has a few external powerpoints available to the campsites near the building. Perfect for bears with CPAPs! Note that these are quite limited, so if you already have a battery for your CPAP, please bring it to free up a powerpoint for another bear.
If you're not the camping type, but still want to come along for a great weekend away, the cottage also has separate bedrooms with king beds, each with their own external access.
The cottage has a bedroom with 4 bunk beds, for those who want a little more comfort, at a lower price.
Crooked Corner is about 3 hours drive from the city, and is about halfway between Goulburn and Bathurst. If you're a solo traveller or a newbie, join our Facebook Messenger chat room to organise a lift!
Everyone will need to bring:
In addition to that, If you're staying in a campsite, you'll also need:
If you're staying in a room, there are powerpoints available, however they aren't right next to the beds. You'll need a plugboard and extension cable for your CPAP machine.
If you're camping, there are powerpoints on the outside of the central camp building, as well as behind the rooms, so make sure you set your tent up nearby, and ensure you bring an extension cable long enough to run from there to your campsite.
The main site is reasonably accessible, it's mostly flat and has few steps. There are some slopes and hills. Further out on the property the ground can be quite uneven, with the trails connecting the sites being mini-bushwalks.
The movie night will be subtitled in English, however the subtitles may be dialog-only, not full SDH.

Every able seaman is ordered to one of Aura’s two decks to dance the night away and show off their prized booty over both Aura’s dance floors. Each floor will cater to different music choices, though a sea shanty will be hard to find.
When you need a break from shaking your booty, head down to the lower decks of Sauna X where you can explore where bears and seamen meet. Here you can work up a different kind of sweat while getting to know your dance partners better than a dance floor allows

And our DJ will be pumping out tunes to keep everyone from Captain Peg Leg to Roger the Cabin Boy happy.
There are a limited number of lockers, so bring a bag/backpack to store your cargo, your best budgie smugglers, and a towel. Parrot and eye patch optional.

Ahoy again, bears! After making waves last week, we’re keeping the ship steady and the good times rolling with a night that’s Nautical... but Nice!
Sail back into the Kings Cross Hotel for round two of seafaring fun from the crows nest. As usual we’ve got the entire rooftop bar to ourselves, and since it’s Mardi Gras, we’ve got spillover room on the ground floor too!
So pull up your rigging, grab your crew, and let’s keep this voyage afloat!
Can you feel it?
It starts as a heartbeat — one that’s echoed through this city since 1978.
Then the bass drops: the roar of the crowd, the thunder of the Dykes on Bikes, the shimmer of sequins under streetlights. From that first rev to the final float, you can feel it rising — an energy that’s wild, defiant, and beautifully alive.
This is Ecstatica — the 48th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, lighting up Oxford Street, Flinders Street, and Anzac Parade on Saturday 28 February 2026.
Over 200 floats and 12,000 marchers will bring the night to life — led proudly by our 78ers, First Nations LGBTQIA+SB communities, and the fearless icons who continue to shape our story. Together, they’ll transform Sydney’s most famous streets into a dazzling current of queer celebration and activism — a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how bright we burn when we rise together.
Join hundreds of thousands of people from Hyde Park to Moore Park as the Parade turns the city electric — a living, breathing spectacle of love, unity, and ecstatic joy.
Please register for this event if you would like to be in the Harbour City Bears 2026 Mardi Gras Parade entry.
Note that this DOES NOT guarantee you a place- we will be selecting from this list of registrations randomly until all places are gone.
HCB members and kindred members will get priority over the general public, so don't forget to log in or use the kindred code to increase your chances.
If you are selected you will receive an email to confirm and make payment, likely in late January.
Not joining the parade?
Don’t want to battle the crowds but want to still be part of the fun?
We have the answer.
Climb up the ships rigging till you reach the crows nest and join our viewing party.
We are taking over the ground floor and balcony level of the Kings Cross Hotel and you are invited along to watch the parade on the big screens.
This is a free event that gives you the luxury of all the amenities of the vessel without the need to battle the high seas.
Congratulations maties, you've made it to the end of Bear Essentials 2026 and Mardi Gras! If you're not totally shagged out by now, we're having one last hurrah at The Townie in Newtown before Mardi Gras sails away for a year.
Join us in wishing a bear voyage to those people who’ve travelled here for Bear Essentials 30!
